KILO BATTERY
4th Battalion-12th Marines

RVN 1965 - 1969

Corporal Jack Maynard Hopkins, "Hoppy" as he was known in the Battery, was the Battery Armorer. As his tour of duty in-country was nearing it's end, Hoppy decided to extend for another tour in Vietnam. After spending his time making sure that the guns could send out the requested fire missions time on target, Hoppy decided to become a Forward Observer for his next tour of duty. On the morning of 2 March 1966, Hoppy was in a jeep on a nameless road outside of Da Nang. He was eager to finish the training exercises he was involved in so he could get out to the bush. As the jeep tractioned through the sand to its destination, a buried land mine exploded. Hoppy died from that explosion. To Hoppy and all the other man and women who gave their lives we say "Semper Fi. We will never forget !"

Above picture shows Hoppy telling some civilian farmers to vacate the area before dark because it becomes a free fire zone.
